I have joined the swap hosted by Blueberry at Blueberry Heart. Last year I joined and did the Autumn swap and met a great blogger friend, Amanda, from Crafty in the Med. I had really just started blogging and I felt this was a great way to meet new bloggers and have some fun. I had a great time last year and I'm looking forward to this year.
I decided to do the Halloween swap this year just to change it up. I've started gathering things together and have emailed my swap partner, Melanie at http://thepatchworkrobin.blogspot.co.uk. I'm just waiting for her to get back to me.
That's all I have for now. It's been a weird week of ups and downs but you guys know how that goes. I've taken advantage of the downs and been working on my silhouette cross stitch. It's really coming together and I can't wait to finish it so I can show everyone.
Monday is Labor Day here in the US, our last "official" holiday of summer. I'm ready for some cooler weather. The heat and humidity have really aggravated my asthma and I've had some trouble getting enough air into my lungs.
Have a great weekend. Thanks for stopping by.
Hugs,
Sharon

Hi ya'll
I know it's been a long time. July was a hectic month and August turned out to be the same. On July 10th, I had some tests done and everything was AOK. It's nice to get good news for a change. Now if I can just get this silly shoulder calmed down, maybe I can get some work done around here. I also visited my daughter, SIL and baby James in July. That trip turned out to be a hard one for me. I went down also to visit a friend of mine whose son is battling leukemia. He got a marrow transplant earlier in the month and was finally able to move to an apartment near the hospital. He and the family have to stay close (within 30 minutes) to the hospital for 100 days. If all continues to go well, he should be able to come home for good in October. Back to my trip story. I had a good drive down. It's about a 4 hour drive and traffic was really easy. I stopped a couple of times. According to my doctor, I'm suppose to stop every hour but that just makes the trip longer. I checked into the motel I normally stay at only to find that the key card was not working on the door I use. It worked fine on my room door but the door to the outside where I park wouldn't read it. On well, got all my stuff into the room and hurried off to see my baby boy. He is growing so much. He gives me the biggest smile when he sees me. Back at the motel, I got ready for bed and was having a good sleep. Around 3 AM, I got up to use the bathroom and the fire alarm went off. All I can say is, it's a good thing I was already in the bathroom! I grabbed my shoes and purse and headed outside. It was amazing to see the other guests just standing in the hallway, not making any attempt to leave. Some even went back to their rooms! Luckily there was no fire; just a broken water pipe. We were finally allowed back into our rooms around 5:30 AM. The trip went downhill from there. I started having pain in my hip and leg on Friday but managed to get to visit Robin anyway. Thank goodness for my sweet daughter. She drove us and we had a great visit. Saturday wasn't much better and when I got ready to leave on Sunday, I had to call Abby and Doug to help me load the truck. We had breakfast together before I hit the road. It took me over 3 days to recover.
August started out in high gear. It's been a month of doctor visits and tests but things are fine. I signed up for a sampler class at my local stitch shop and that was the first day of August. I have to say, I'm not really good at working on linen but this class gave me some confidence. We learned several different stitches. Each stitch creates a row on the sampler and it's been a joy to do. I have all my homework done and I'm ready for the next session in September.
I'm also working on a Halloween cross stitch now and loving every minute of it.The fabric is an overdyed orange and uses only black thread. It will be a silhouette when finished. I don't know what it is about it but I am enjoying it so much and can't help but smile each time I lay it in my lap to re-thread my needle. :)
I went to the mail box, a few days ago, during a sprinkling rain and wow, a memory just came popping into my head. We have these very tall Willow Oak trees which give tons of shade in our front yard. They make the porch a really nice place to sit even on hot days if the humidity isn't really high. Walking to the mail box under the trees, I noticed there was very little rain hitting me. When I was a kid, there were big maple trees in the front yard of Grampa and Gramma Broyles' house. The leaves blocked the rain in all but the really hard downpours and we kids could play under them and never get wet. It is a sweet summertime memory of rain, wet grass and the drip, drip, drip of the raindrops on the leaves. Those days keep pulling me back and I feel a peace when I'm wandering around in my memories.
Below is an oil painting of my grandparents house. One of my aunts hired a local artist to do one for each of her sisters. When my Aunt Shirley passed away, Uncle Billy called my Mom and told her he wanted me to have her painting. It hangs in my hallway and I can take a trip down memory lane each time I look at it.
I had to take it at an angle because there's not enough room in the hall to get back far enough.
This past weekend, Sweet Baby James came for a visit. We were so happy to see him and his mom and dad. He's sitting up on his own now and has two teeth. Little man is growing way too fast for his Grammy. He handled the trip fairly well except for one meltdown when they were about an hour away. He was just so tired of sitting in his car seat and Abby said he really cried hard. When she got him out of his seat and turned him so that he could see me, the biggest grin spread across his face. I love that he knows me and is happy to see me. Everyone had a great time. The Hubs and SIL went to ride a trail up north of us. It's a 60 mile round trip and the Hubs loves riding it. They spent the day and my daughter and I and James spent some great time together running around. The weekend was such a great one that on Monday, when they left, I sat down to watch a show on TV and fell asleep in my recliner. I slept for 2-1/2 hours. James wore Grammy out!!!! But I wouldn't have it any other way.
I hope to start blogging more regularly. The weather is getting cooler (most days) and that makes me feel better. I'm dealing with some pain but that's a normal thing these days. I've learned to just go on and take lots of breaks. When I was younger and had better health, I would have loved to be able to justify my breaks as needed. I just didn't realize how lucky I was that I had mobility and pain free days. I guess I'm not ever satisfied with my lot in life. But actually now I am. I don't enjoy the painful days or the days I can't get out of bed, but I'm happy to still be able to get up and do what I can. I am learning to accept that life is slower now and that I have to adapt.
As always, thank you for stopping by. I hope you are have a great summer/winter wherever you may be.
Hugs,
Sharon/Grammy

Thank You!
Just a quick post to say thank you so much for all the sweet things you left on my blog. I'm glad you enjoyed the cross stitch and the old pictures. As I told Annie, I hope to do more posts about my younger days. I think this blog is a perfect place to record those and maybe one day, my kids and grandkids will enjoy reading about my early life.
I also have an apology to make. I thought all the comments on my blog were showing up in my gmail account. However, I have discovered that this is not so. I will now be looking more carefully and trying to respond to your comments. After all, if you take the time to comment, I should take the time to respond. I love this blogging community and all the wonderful people I have "met".
I'm close to the end of my first year of blogging and I have 47 followers. I'm really excited about this. I'm going to host my first ever giveaway at the one year mark or when I get 50 followers, whichever comes first.
I'm pulling some things together.
Thanks for dropping by.
Hugs,
Sharon

OH MY!
Oh my. I didn't realize it had been so long since I had done a post. I guess my new found freedom has gone to my head. I've been busy reading, cross stitching, planning, etc. I've really not been getting a lot done but I have a lot of lists. Do you make lists? I am the Queen of List Making. I have a list for everything: what I plan to do this week, grocery list, the order of stops when I run errands, how I want to change things in a room; they just go on and on.
I have gone back to my first love. I'm cross stitching again and I have had such a calmness about me this past week. I picked up a piece that I worked on last year and settled in to finish it. I think I had to quit because I was having trouble with my right hand and wrist. I'm pretty sure that's why because now I have to take breaks or I can't move my hand the next day. I'm so tired of having to pace myself in every thing I do. Clean a while, sit down, run errands, rest, cross stitch, take a break. ARG! It's so annoying. I have been watching the Tour de France and cross stitching in the afternoons. I'm recording the live shows. I love cycling. I wish I could ride like those guys. It's poetry in motion.
Anyway, back to the cross stitching. I have a thing about seasons. My daughter asked me once, "What is it with you and seasonal stitching?" *grin* I really don't know but they speak to me. The piece I'm working on is a street scene with different shops. I've already done at least one of the seasons and maybe two. This one is summer.
I'm working on the back stitching which I absolutely love to do. I love how the piece comes alive. It just seems to jump off the fabric when the back stitching is finished. I hope you can see the difference in the photo.
Saturday, my sister found some old photos in a box she was going through and sent them to me asking who was in a couple of them. I love looking at old photos and these were some "really" old ones.
This one was made in the summer after I was born in February. That would be the summer of 1951, 62 years ago!
This one is of my Dad when he was around 15.
There are so many memories linked to those photos. They were made at my Grampa and Gramma Broyles home. The house was log. In the photo of Dad, you can see the rock chinking they used between the logs. Later there was concrete covering this if I remember correctly. At the back of the front two rooms, there was an addition of another room and the kitchen. There was a porch along the front with a big swing. At least it seemed big when I was small. My cousins and I would get that thing going really big and get flipped backwards out into the yard! It was hilarious. We'd jump up and run around up on the porch and do it again. My grandmother was bedridden and her bed was in the living room right in front of the window where the swing was. She would tell us to stop swinging so high, we were going to get hurt. After a couple of times doing really big swings, she would send one of the aunts out to settle us down.
There was also a creek that ran along the edge of the farm and in the summer we cousins would play down there, building dams to make it deeper and digging holes and just having a really great time. Because my grandmother was bedridden, she either sat or laid in bed facing out toward the room. It was really hard for her to turn her body and her view out the window was limited. We came to believe that Gramma had eyes in the back of her head because no matter how sneaky we were nor how quiet we were going to the creek, she would know and she would yell for us not to get in the creek because it was "Dog Days" and we would get sick. "Dog Days" are usually the hottest part of the summer, most often in August but for Gramma, it was all summer long.
Living in the country was a wonderful way to grow up. I was an only child and was content most of the time to play by myself, but when we went to Gramma's, there were cousins just across the road to play with. We would play outside until dark. There was a ditch that ran between the yard of the house and the hay field. It was mostly a dry ditch, only having water when there was a lot of rain. We called it a gully. The water washed away the dirt from the tree rooms and there were always rocks and sticks and leaves. We had our houses in the tree roots and we would "cook" and "clean" and "raise our babies". I think about that now and it seems so far away. That was a great life when I was a kid. I didn't have responsibilities and there was always someone around to check on us and make sure we were okay. Most of the time we were just left to our own plans and nobody worried about us.
Ah well, life goes on. But I do like looking at old photos and remembering when. Do you have fond memories of your childhood?
As always, thanks for stopping by. Today it is raining, raining, raining. I am watching the recorded Stage 5 of the Tour and cross stitching. Thursday is July 4, Independence Day here in America. I hope all of you here in America have a wonderful 4th. Happy Canada Day to our neighbors to the north, a little late. And to everyone, I hope you have a wonderful week no matter where you are.
Hugs,
Sharon

Random Thoughts and Success
I have finally gotten completely caught up on all my blog reading. It has taken a while but my new found freedom has let me get into the blog reader and see all the missed blogs. Wow, there were a lot, multiples of most every blog I follow. But I am totally caught up and ready for more. :)
I got my hair cut Tuesday. I have been waffling about going shorter and today, decided to take the plunge and ask for a short, short cut. Tammy, my stylist, gave me the option of clippers all over or just sides and back and I quickly said, sides and back before I changed my mind. I now have the Hubs haircut in back. There is a little length on top but not much.
Ignore the goofy look. It's hard to get a photo in the mirror and it's doubly hard to get all my fluffy face in. The Hubs took the first one. I took the camera away from him after that.
While sitting there getting clipped, another customer came in with her two boys to see one of the other stylists. Tammy was talking to her when she asked, "Is that Abby's Mom?". Turns out she was Allison, a friend of Abby's who went all through school with her. Her mother passed away a few months ago and Allison has been having a really hard time as she and her mother were very, very close. She had brought some things of her mother's (lotions, soaps and shampoo) with her to see if there might be someone who could use them. She got up and came over to Tammy and quietly, almost in a whisper, said, "Her hair is gray, do you think she would like to have this shampoo?" I looked up and said, "Whose hair is gray?" and then I really laughed because let's face it, at 62 most people have gray hair. I asked Tammy if she had cut all my color off! It was sweet and funny at the same time. It was a bottle of shampoo to keep gray hair from yellowing and Tammy said to only use it once a week or I would end up with lavender hair. Hmmmm, now THAT would be a change!
Maggie May has started blooming. Magnolia blossoms are so pretty and smell heavenly. I love it when Maggie starts putting those blossoms on for the summer. The air smells so good and those white blooms against those deep, dark leaves are so pretty. It puts a smile on my face each time I look her way.
And finally, the peace lily in the kitchen is blooming. Two blooms! It has bloomed with one every year since I got it over 20 years ago, but this time there are two blooms.
Life is starting to settle into a routine. I'm busy in the office/craft room moving things around and clearing out stuff. Hopefully the desk will leave over the weekend and I can start on the corner of doom trying to sort and clear out. We haven't been very good about dealing with instruction books and warranties of our purchases, mainly just tossing them in a box in the corner. It doesn't help that said corner is blocked by the desk and the printer table. Oh well, there's always something. I unplugged an old printer yesterday to add it to the yard sale stack and the power cord fell behind the filing cabinets. Oooops. The power pack is on top of the cabinet but the end that attaches to the printer is stuck and I can't get it out. When I told the Hubs, he got this funny look on his face and said, "Now I have to move the cabinet?" Uh, yes! That's another job for him over the weekend. Have to keep him busy, right? Makes him feel needed!
Supper tonight is soup beans and cornbread. If you are from the southern US, you will understand. If you are from elsewhere, just know that it's a really great meal and very easy to fix. I'm all about easy right now.
As always, thank you for stopping by. I love having each one of you here and enjoy reading your comments when you have time to make them. Have a wonderful day wherever you might be.

She seems to have not suffered too much from the abuse she took earlier this spring.
I also checked on my petunias at the mail box. They are growing very well and filling the pots. We've had rain for several days and so I haven't had to carry water to them.

Good Things Come by Post
Last Wednesday, I was waiting on the mail because I knew I was getting a package from Amazon. I had ordered a couple of books to read and two crochet books. I love getting packages in the mail even when I know they are coming. So I was ready when the post lady beeped her horn. Out I went, eager to get my box with the smile so I could look through the crochet books. But, surprise, there was another package. What? I didn't order anything else. Oh well, I thought, the Hubs has ordered something and not told me. So I gathered up my goodies and headed back inside to start the opening.
I laid the second package to the side because I was so eager to get into my Amazon box. Want to see what I got??? Of course, you do.
I have always loved Mr. Rogers and I look forward to reading this book about him and James Patterson is one of my favorite authors. The crochet books are going to be so much fun. I'm thinking a granny square sampler blanket will be in my future. And the borders, oh my. I always struggle with borders for my blankets and afghans. I certainly hope this solves that problem.
So after a few minutes of book love, I turned to the other package. Hmmmm, from the UK and addressed to me! Well, then the Hubs hasn't ordered anything. So I got my scissors and carefully opened this surprise. Oh Wow! I had totally forgotten I had won a giveaway from Hawthorn, she of I live, I love, I craft fame. She works in a vet clinic and had posted a comment from one of the farmers, asking if we had any idea what he was saying. AND I WON!!!! I love Hawthorn's blog, the photos of the countryside, the stories of the vet clinic, everything. And I now I love it even more. I got a Yorkshire Dialect tea towel and 2 skeins of Rowan cashsoft dk yarn. Oh. My. Goodness. Look, look, look!
I realize I should have hung up the towel so you could see it better but it's been one of those days and I just truly wanted to get the photos on here. I am so in love with this gift.
I am so excited and thrilled with my tea towel and yarn. I plan on framing the towel. No way will there be wet, dirty hands touch this! When it's framed, I'll take another photo so you can see it much better. And the yarn, such a lovely shade. I have never owned any yarn so soft, so delicate, so wonderful. I have absolutely no idea what I will make with it. Suggestions are welcome. There is a total of 252 yds or 230 m. Kate, you made me so happy. I'm still beaming. Thank you again so very much.
Good things make for a happy Grammy. As always thanks for stopping by my little blog. That makes me happy also. Thank you for all your comments on my last post. I have to say, I'm thoroughly enjoying the extra time. I mentioned to the Hubs last Thursday night that it seemed odd not to be scrambling trying to finish checks and get things sorted and filed. He offered to find me something to do.......um, no thanks.
If you are a new follower, welcome aboard. I haven't been keeping up with that like I should and I'm sorry if I've failed to thank you for following.

I laid the second package to the side because I was so eager to get into my Amazon box. Want to see what I got??? Of course, you do.
Couldn't resist. :)
"Arse over tit" Gotta love it!
Isn't that the most adorable little lamb?
I realize I should have hung up the towel so you could see it better but it's been one of those days and I just truly wanted to get the photos on here. I am so in love with this gift.

An Ending and A New Beginning
First of all since Monday is Memorial day here in the states, I want to salute all our brave men and women who have and still are serving our country, protecting us from harm, and willing to put their lives on the line each and every day so that I can live without constant fear.
The times, they are a-changin'. Big changes to my day to day life. I have been a bookkeeper with my own business for over 25 years. A few years ago when I started having health issues, I closed my business. However, I did continue to do some books pro bono because I wanted to keep busy and I have always loved working with numbers. This past week, one of the companies decided that they needed to go with someone who was licensed and insured. They have been a long standing customer; but I was beginning to realize that I needed to give this up as it is at least a weekly operation for me and sometimes a daily one. So when I was told on Thursday, I welcomed the decision. I actually know the young lady who will be taking over and she is a great girl, very talented and smart and I totally wish her well. The transition will take a few weeks but the feeling of relief and lightness on Friday was amazing. As I drove home from dropping off the records, I feel so free. I even shouted out loud, "I'm free" while in the truck and then I giggled! Maybe the freedom went a little bit to my head but it felt so wonderful to know that I don't have to do this anymore.
I thought a part of me would be sad but I haven't felt any sadness at all. I have packed up the rest of the filing and other things that need to go to the new accountant this weekend and there has been a smile on my face the whole time. I looked around today and thought that now I can settle and get some more crocheting and cross stitching done because I won't have to worry about the phone ringing and someone saying they needed something RIGHT NOW!
Along with the new freedom I'm feeling, The Hubs and I are clearing up "stuff" and paring down what we have. We are trying for a leaner, more simple home life without a bunch of "things" around. I am solely using my laptop now (with external hard drives so I don't lose anything should it decide to croak on me) so when we got the desktop back from the repair shop, I told him it was his. Now that I don't need a regular desk anymore, I want to move it out and move in the cross stitch cabinet we designed and he had built for me along with a glider rocker so that I have a quiet little place to cross stitch and crochet and so all my crafty things will be together in one place. I'm excited and hoping that this will happen. I just have to figure out where the desk will go (into another bedroom, possibly?) and decide what I am and am not going to keep of the things in the drawers. I have watched and read with HUGE envy all the bloggers who have a room all their own for their yarn, fabric, books and other things they need to do their craft. Now maybe I will be able to have a little corner for myself.
And one more thing, the depression and pain that has bothered me for the past few (or several) weeks has relented. Of course, my rheumatologist put me on prednisone for a week last Monday and I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. But that stress that went along with doing these books is now gone and I feel relaxed. I truly feel that I was meant to be a "lady of leisure" if only for my health and my sanity. :)
Thank you all for all your kindness and concern over the past few posts. I have read each and every comment and they have made me smile and have given me a warm feeling. I truly love each of you and consider each of you a dear friend even though we are miles and continents away from each other. This bloggy world is a special place.
Thank you for stopping by. I hope each of you have a wonderful day tomorrow and that life treats you well.
Hugs,
Grammy Sharon
